Understanding your home security system

We know that home security can be really confusing and every home has different security needs and budgets. So, to make it easy for you, we’ve outlined some basics you should look for in your home security system.

Things your alarm system should have:

  • 24/7 back-to-base monitoring
    Know that you’re protecting what matters most, whether you’re at home or away
  • A minimum of two intruder detection devices 
    When these are installed on or near the main entry points to your home, you and your family can move about your home freely, knowing that your entry is protected.
  • Connection to mains electricity.
    No need to worry about battery life.
  • At least one internal siren
    Two may be more beneficial, with one near the most likely entry point, to make you feel safe, knowing that you’ll be alerted immediately.
  • Window labels
    Window labels that display a warning that your home is protected by an alarm system are also an effective deterrent, giving you added confidence that you’re protecting what matters most.

To give you even more certainty and peace of mind, we recommend:
  • Reed switches that activate the alarm at entry points (such as doors and windows).
    Magnetic reed switches can detect an intruder before entry. You and your family can move freely around your home, knowing you’ll be alerted should anyone try to breach any protected entry points. 
  • The capability to isolate different zones
    You can choose the rooms you want to be using at any time. 
  • Smoke detectors connected to your home security alarm
    Hard-wired smoke detectors don’t just alert you to smoke or fire; if your alarm is triggered, we’ll know at our A1 grade 24/7 Security Monitoring Centre and can call the fire brigade on your behalf.
  • An annual preventative maintenance service
    You’ll know your system is operating at peak performance, ensuring you continue to protect what’s most precious to you.
  • Individual access codes for all family members
    You’ll know who’s in and who’s out, and everyone in your household has control over their access and safety.
  • Remote control device programmed with a panic button
    Panic buttons can be a great comfort for vulnerable family members, especially when you aren’t around. When the panic button is deployed, your system sends an alert to the 24/7 Security Monitoring Centre, who can then deal with the situation quickly and appropriately.
